Northwestern Mutual has re-pledged its commitment to downtown Milwaukee by replacing and expanding portions of its existing headquarters to more than double the population of its current downtown workforce. The outdated 16-story 1979 East tower will be replaced with a state-of-the-art 32-story workplace tower, while preserving and reinforcing the connection to the exquisite neoclassical 1912 South Office Building and landscaped gardens. A new 3-story commons building links the South, North, and Van Buren Office Buildings with amenities and support spaces through a renovated skylit courtyard in the center of the “U”-shaped South Office Building.
The new tower faces Lake Michigan with a gently curved façade, opening views to the lake while the other facades address the downtown grid.
